With the rise of viral and bacterial threats, the efforts required to maintain personal health and safety have increased exponentially. In addition to this laundry list of efforts, the requirement of wearing a mask has also created a new issue that is beginning to bog everyone down – Maskne. Dear Friends of Porcelain,  

The days are long but the years are short, and I cannot believe how quickly time passes us by. In the blink of an eye and Porcelain turns 11 as I recall each Porcelain milestone like it happened only yesterday.  

We didn’t make a big deal of our tenth anniversary because we felt that we were still a young company with so much room to grow. However, in 2020, we were put to the test by COVID. Questions raced through my mind – do we have sufficient cash-flow, do we have a nimble team, can we preserve jobs, will our customers support us, how do we continue to serve during this period?  It was when we answered all these questions I’d realized our last ten years haven’t been in vain as we have built quite a solid foundation.

From establishing our first spa to developing a full range of in-house formulated products, we have come far. We have won more than 70 beauty awards locally and internationally, proud to be recognized globally as the Best Beauty Spa in Asia for 8 years (WLSA, Haute Grandeur), and featured on the Louis Vuitton City Guide since 2012. I have recently written about how our dreams can come true, if we work hard for it. I had dreamed of a day where Porcelain would be recognized as a skincare leader, while being human as a company. Porcelain 2020 isn’t too far from that dream.

The pandemic and temporary closure of our spas, have forced us to grow and to change. I believe these new shifts will pave the way for future success:


Training has been our core and we have now taken to virtual training. We took the opportunity to refresh and up skill every single person in the team, clocking in an estimated 160 hours of training per person during Circuit Breaker. Fun fact: Up to this day, I personally test every therapist before they are allowed to perform the treatments on you to ensure uncompromising results and quality.

Virtual Skin Education (VSE) 

Education forms the heart of what we do and we wanted to continue doing so in the virtual space. A task force was put together to create the program in March and a three-module education program is now available for you. This is not a sales program – but one to connect, engage and build your skincare relationship with you.  

Personal Prescription 

During this ‘break’, we have kept jobs by keeping busy.  Your therapist have worked in teams to discuss your skin issues, to develop a personalized product and treatment plan to help you achieve your skin goals.  You can now view the prescribed plans by logging on to your account on the latest  Porcelain Skin Mobile App.


With online sales being our only revenue stream the past months, we have worked tirelessly to ensure our skincare products are readily available for you. You can now shop for Porcelain skincare on Porcelain, Krisshop (yes, you can redeem using miles), Lazada, Amazon and a few more in the pipeline.

Also, many friends of Porcelain have been so kind to post their skincare routine, and testimonials for us on Instagram and on our website. We are tremendously grateful for your word-of-mouth, for this is what our business is built on! 

Giving Back 

As a company, we are constantly exploring new ways to give back and contribute. We have launched Reusable Cotton Pads that comes with a cute laundry bag and 100% of profits goes to The Nature Conservancy. Our R&D team have also been hard at work to create a sanitizer good enough for use on the face. Leveraging on our knowledge on skin, the Skin Protecting Sanitiser is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, 100% natural, alcohol-free and child-friendly. It does not just protect you from viruses but also keeps acne at bay. 500 pieces from the first batch will be donated to Healthcare workers.

Following the announcement of the start of Phase 2, we are happy to announce that our spas have officially opened on 19 June.

While we are excited to welcome you back with relaxing treatments and services, your safety is our priority. Thus, we are happy to announce that all our spas are Clean Mark Certified. In addition to being certified, we will also be conducting the following procedures in our spas:

– Social Distancing within spa premises
– Sanitising rooms before & after use
– Therapists conducting treatments will be wearing a face mask, face shield and latex gloves
– Spa beds are sanitised and disposable bed sheets are replaced after each client
– Hourly wipe downs with medical grade sanitising solutions
– Providing hand sanitisers throughout the spa

Upon the announcement of the start of Phase 2, we have been receiving a high volume of requests to make appointments in our spas. Though we are grateful for the enthusiasm, this volume of requests has greatly slowed down our response time to booking requests made via WhatsApp. Thus, to ensure that you are able to get the slot of your choice, we highly recommend appointment bookings through our Mobile App.

As we look forward to gradually welcoming you back into our spas, we understand that you may be not be ready to leave the safety of your homes just yet. Thus, we will continue to make our our Virtual Skin Education complimentary for you. The immense changes to our lifestyle, erratic climate and hormonal changes have resulted in the increase occurrence of skin sensitivity and acne for many. With the Virtual Skin Education, we hope you can learn more about your skin and keep it safe and healthy while staying home.

With tightened efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, we will be continue to suspend all facial services. ALL Porcelain spas will be closed during the Circuit Breaker period from 07 April– 01 June 2020

All appointments booked from 07 April onwards will be cancelled, with sessions returned to your account. All active packages will be extended by 6 months, and GSS packages by 3 months, from 07 April 2020. There will be no required action on your end. 

In the meantime, for future appointments after 01 June 2020, you may still continue to use our mobile application ‘Porcelain Skin’ to request your bookings.

Dear Porcelain Community,

This is a turbulent way to start the year and I wish we were communicating under better circumstances. Hope everyone is keeping well. 

COVID-19 has thrown many businesses, governments and institutions off their rails. With all the measures put into place, sales and occupancy rates across the industries have taken a nosedive, and will reach an unprecedented low, if not already. Regardless, I am writing to assure you that the Porcelain team has been working tirelessly to ensure that our business continues to operate and that our employees and clients are taken care of. 

In light of the social distancing measures, we understand you may not return as frequently as you wish. Hence, all packages will be extended by 6 months, and GSS packages by 3 months. Additionally, we will continue to offer complimentary delivery for all e-commerce orders.

Being in the spa business, our top non-negotiables are Hygiene and Sanitation. We have always operated at extremely high standards. We have undergone stringent hygiene audits for the Clean Mark Certification and await final confirmation from the authorities.

We were prompt in implementing processes to do temperature checks since early February, and turned away clients with high-risk travel history since. Stores are sanitized frequently, and safe distancing have been implemented. Complimentary hand-sanitisers refill is also available for all customers.

To safeguard the health and safety of our employees, BCP plans have been implemented and improved along the way. Retail staff in one store will not be able to make any physical contact with staff from another store.

We believe in treating our people well and fair.  When the Malaysian Movement Control Order, our staff had a choice to stay in Malaysia or to continue work while we provide temporary housing in a 4* hotel. A handful of them have decided to stay in Malaysia and will return when the order is lifted.

Without jeopardizing jobs, staff idle time has been converted to training. This allows us to serve you better when you return. We have also made the business decision to close Porcelain Aesthetics permanently for the lease came up at the perfect time. We can now focus all our resources and not spread ourselves too thin. Lastly, to better manage the crowd at Porcelain Origins, we have decided to temporarily close the café for 2 months, reopening it on 1st June

Our digital transformation initiatives have paid off, as our team is fully on the cloud and our back-end operations continue to function at maximum capacity despite the new work-from-home measures. We continue to develop exciting plans for you for in 2020, and we sincerely hope that you will continue to support Porcelain, without which we couldn’t have had the ability to create all these jobs.  

Many of you may know that my mother’s business folded in 2004 as a result of the SARS epidemic. When we started Porcelain in 2009, that memory was still fresh, and for ten years, we have been cautious not to walk down that path should it happen again. However, COVID-19 came at a pace and scale that everyone was ill-prepared for. Regardless, we know that as a team, if we stick together, we can weather this storm. This cannot happen without you – your love and trust in Porcelain.
