Insider News

We offer you a glimpse into the world of Porcelain’s insider news, its DNA and people behind-the-scenes. A visual and literary representation of the latest, most exciting, newsworthy news in Porcelain. Includes anything from new treatments to just-launched products… and more!

Nostalgia is addictive, isn’t it? I’ve been on a loopy repeat on Diana Krall’s Paula Cole’s Autumn Leaves, its lulling melody never failing to take me back to… then.

There isn’t a specific time I always return to. It often depends on the time, day and mood I’m in — and how far I let it carry me. There’s just something about the languid pull of the accordion, the Spanish guitar that slows then jogs, the jazz snare…

<Hit “Play” before reading on!>

Although, it might just be the fact that we recently moved out of our shophouse office (that’s 9 years of history, mind) — that’s got us travelling back in time. Packing isn’t so much about putting things into boxes as a game of “Ooh, look what I found!”. In a bid to lighten our moving load, we then repeat the riddle of “To keep, or to throw?” (if you’re a habitual hoarder, you might want to check out this post).

If you’re anything like me, you start digging for more nostalgic scraps of history when you’ve found the tip of the iceberg. It was absolutely human for me to snoop a little deeper to unearth the different phases faces of Porcelain.

… look what I found! Were you there when…

Our therapists and HQ colleagues worked within one shophouse?

Were you there when our first spa opened on Cantonment Road? Then, we ran the office and spa out of the same one-unit shophouse, had one Ikea table and chair, and our founders earned peanuts while reinvesting their profits back into growing the business. The brand has now grown into 4 outlets, and the office peeps also take refuge at Porcelain HQ, our second home. We’re expanding, so holler if you’d like to join the team!

We went through a brand transformation… twice?

Take a look at the shophouse photo again. Take a look at the ones above. Notice anything different? Porcelain has always been a dynamic brand since its conception. Just looking at the photos of the many changes it’s been through, it felt like nothing is ever taken for granted at Porcelain. Whether it’s the logo that morphs, or the products that continually undergo revamps to make them better and more relevant to our clients, the one question that’s always asked is, “Does the product deserve a space on your shelf?”

Our founders faces (never) changed?

Truth be told, our founders still look the same… Nothing nostalgic to sniff out here. Aside from a refresh in hairstyles, the two ladies still possess the same personalities, passion and drive as when they first founded Porcelain. Next.

“It’s not about a period of time or a demographic. It’s about finding romance in everything, in beauty or in things that are sad.”
– Diana Krall

What were some of your favourite, most nostalgic memories of Porcelain?

Stay True,

Porcelain's Intensive - HA+ Hydrating Serum is powerpacked with 4 complexes: Deep Moisture, Anti-Ageing, Sensitive, and Anti-Acne

There, we’ve said it. The HA+ Hydrating Serum is the first of Porcelain’s new Intensive line of products, and we made it for the clients who inspired us to curate amazing ingredients into four specific complexes. Four, to help clients from all walks of life enjoy a hydrating serum that would be suitable for any skin type, any age, and any climate. But it took two years before we were ready to unveil it to the world.

The serum was first launched internally — as with any other product we have to ensure it works – before being sold in-store. Like Pauline said during our media launch just the 3rd of May, we run a tight ship with our products.

“Does this product deserve a space on your shelf?”

We took two years to be able to say, hell yeah!

So here’s the story we wanted to share that we feel is more important than any blow-by-blow sales talk. Because hey, you can read that here. Instead, let’s talk about the story behind the HA+ Hydrating Serum.

And that’s really our clients’ stories that we’re sharing. Every day, our clients talk to us. It goes beyond “How’s your day?” – beyond skin deep. Many tell us they have oily skin (but they’re really just dehydrated). A few struggle with how to properly moisturize dry skin.  The ultimate question that triggers our brainstorming frenzy:

“I can’t find anything out there that works for me; do you have a solution?”

The truth is, there are many incredible products out there with great anti-ageing benefits, or hydration, or acne control. And that was when it hit us – the keyword is “or”. There is a plethora of products in the market that specifically focus on just one or two main skin concerns. For example, there are many rich creams. Plenty that contain hyaluronic acid. Even more with ingredients that help boost collagen levels… But how many anti-ageing products had more benefits than just plumping up wrinkles? How many could be used by certain people that provide the benchmark of it being suitable for anyone and everyone – people with sensitive or even acneic skin?

Porcelain's Intensive - HA+ Hydrating Serum is designed for anyone at any stage of their anti-ageing regime

“What gap are we trying to fill here?”

With that, out popped our latest flagship product, the HA+ Hydrating Serum – specially designed not just for anti-ageing and hydration, but also to combat acne (with good bacteria) and soothe and even heal sensitive skin. A product to fill out all that the “Ors” couldn’t – to fill the gap that our clients helped us realize was there.

To you.

#DearPauline: Our Very Own Beauty Column!

We’re back with a new #DearPauline post to talk about acne! In our last post, we covered dull and sensitive skin. This week, we address a very common skin concern: managing acne.

Managing acne

But first, an introduction to acne and its causes

Acne affects almost all teenagers. The condition results from hormones reacting with the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands). The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum. This empties onto the skin’s surface through the hair follicle opening (pore). The mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria to grow in the follicle openings. Pores thus become clogged and pimples develop.

While there are many causes that contribute to its appearance, e.g. lifestyle and hereditary factors, the more common ones are:

  • Excess oil production
  • Hair follicles clogged by sebum (or oil) and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria (e.g P.acnes bacteria)
  • Hormonal imbalance

Managing acne

Here’s a question from Sunita Pong (@sunitapong):

“I’ve been battling hormonal adult cystic acne for half my life, and have tried just about everything and anything under the sun to counter the breakouts.  I haven’t tried targeted facials as I worry they might exacerbate my current skin condition. Are there any solutions to this?

– @sunitapong

…and here’s our answer:

Battling hormonal cystic acne is painful, both physically and emotionally. Acne treatment is our forte and we have dealt with many cases like yours. This requires professional care. Dermatologists typically prescribe topical steroids, retinol (oral or topical), antibiotics, lasers and chemical peels. But we have many clients who want more natural alternatives with less potential side-effects.

Facials can work, but as your skin is extremely delicate, we need to go through a very long process (6 months to 1 year) to help reduce bacterial infections, balance your skin’s pH and improve its resilience. However, we are treating the root of the issue, and this will help significantly reduce acne in the long run. To do this, we use a combination of treatments (with customised frequencies) with a prescribed series for homecare, and we require the client to work really closely with us.

Here are some acne-related posts we’ve done previously which will aid you in your battle:

WAIT, WHAT’S #DEARPAULINE?

Think “Aunt Agony”, except “#DearPauline” is our personal beauty column! Like our #BareWithMe campaign, in collaboration with the amazing Wear Oh Where, we meet different women from all walks of life to talk skin. Our first instalment of #DearPauline (with Hanli Hoefer) is up now.

When we began our #BareWithMe and #DearPauline journey with WearOhWhere, we were sure we might encounter roadblocks along the way. After all, vulnerability and baring it all aren’t concepts many would be comfortable with – and on social media at that. Through having honest conversations with women who are influential in their own ways, we hoped to inspire the average, everyday lady to similarly gain the courage and open up to share their own stories. To reveal the most real you and to find beauty in that — and in others’ truest selves. And today? We’re 3 stories in: Botanical artist Lucinda Law, MTV VJ Hanli Hoefer, and now, co-founder of Love, Bonito, Viola Tan — who really hits the nail on the head. She sums up a large part of our purpose in rolling this project out:

“When we are willing to show that we are human and stop trying to appear “perfect”, when we open up about our struggles, we might just be helping someone else find strength in their vulnerability.”

Opening up with us, Viola shares insight after powerful insight. A personal favourite?

“If you tie your happiness to another person’s appraisal of you, you’ll never be happy.”

She also divulges her idea of a safe space, what introversion means to her, and an assortment of quotes that lent her strength in times when all seemed lost. She even shares her quick tip for jetlag and a hangover – something we can’t say we condone, but we’ve all had those!

When we started this campaign, we weren’t too sure how it would pan out. But we’ve experienced nothing less than extremely genuine, personal stories and candid moments of laughter. Behind the powerful, public personas that most see, our 3 women really are more human than we might have thought. It was a humbling experience to read their stories where they bared what they could in the short time we had with them. And we invite you to do the same.

If you’d like to be a part of our #BareWithMe campaign, simply hop on our bandwagon and share one thing which you feel grateful for today, and why, here. To thank you for sharing, we have a little something special for you — one 60-minute OxyReviveTM facial treatment with us (worth S$212.93) + our absolute favourite Soothe — Deep Hydrating Lotion (120ml, worth S$69) — to give away at the end of the month.

Oh, and Viola’s word for 2018?

Courage.

I’ve always wanted to have an Aunt Agony column and now we do – only ours is a beauty column! Entitled “Dear Pauline”, we will have it up on WearOhWhere for just 3 months and the first is up here! Like our #BareWithMe campaign, we collaborate with different women from all walks of life. Still centred on honest conversations, we stack up their beauty and skincare woes against our MD Pauline Ng’s skincare savvy / prowess / expertise. Can Pauline answer them all?

(Read our very first #BareWithMe story here if you haven’t yet done so!)

We had to do this first column ourselves, but we really want this to be all about you! After all, what’s a beauty column without answering our readers’ questions? You’ll have 2 more chances to throw us beauty and skincare questions you’ve always wondered about, and we’ll have them answered in the next post. So, read our first #DearPauline exchange with MTV VJ Hanli Hoeffer here, and leave us a comment below to share your woes! We promise to be honest.

And one last thing… #DearPauline isn’t going to be your typical beauty column where we answer only skincare woes. Our candid, open conversation goes beyond skin deep, as we take a deep dive into Hanli’s life as a teen, her definition of beauty, and how she really feels about being 1.75m tall… amongst other things. You might just find yourself struck by honest truths like

“Spend time in the nude more often, laugh at yourself when you can… and learn to let go of the things you can’t control.”

How can we not love this girl?

Read our first #DearPauline exchange with Hanli here!  And remember to pop us some questions (:

Stay True,
