Welcome to #MyimPerfection – a collection of real stories, graciously shared by individuals on their path to embracing their true selves, unabashed and unmasked.

The journey to embracing one’s imperfections is very personal – some find their way by prioritising their self-care, others through friends and family, while some find their way by breaking through personal boundaries and comfort zones.

Welcome to #MyimPerfection – a collection of real stories, graciously shared by individuals on their path to embracing their true selves, unabashed and unmasked.

This month, we were blessed with the opportunity to listen to a story from a different perspective – one of liberty found beyond boundaries.

Despite the early morning rain, the mood at the seemingly serene Porcelain Face Spa was bright and teeming, eager to meet our guest for this instalment of the #MyimPerfection series. – Derrick. Much like the spa itself, Derrick’s initial calm and composed energy soon melted away for unbeatable confidence and infectious laughter that made the conversation lively.

What is your imperfection?

“It was acne problems for me. I started dealing with it in my teenage days and it was terrible.”

Seeking solutions to manage his acne by himself, Derrick turned to beauty forums. Not armed with sufficient knowledge at the time, he started to follow the forum’s DIY solutions – from mixing apple cider vinegar with rose water to only sticking to 3 skincare steps to minimise pore congestion. Derrick dabbled in various remedies and skincare products, believing they would help his skin. However, these homemade concoctions never gave him the skin of his dreams. Instead, it caused his oily-combination skin to turn sensitive.

As Derrick progressed to university, his self-esteem and confidence took a hit.

“I was pursuing a business degree, which entailed a lot of presentations. Standing and presenting next to friends who had flawless skin and looked good eventually caused me to lose my sense of confidence.”

Throughout his schooling experience, he braved through comments made about his skin – from those suggesting he needed to do something about his skin to statements that played to negative university faculty stereotypes.

“I couldn’t lift my head up when I was out, which meant that I stayed home a lot, just to avoid having people look at my skin. There was even an instance where I heard a child ask their mum what happened to my face. It was awful.”

At the time, Derrick was still relying upon the advice of forums and testing various products in hopes of finding the right solution. Surprisingly, Derrick shared that he did not consider facials as he was held back by traditional views about the service.

“I never believed in facials as I adopted the traditional mindset that in society, only women and effeminate men were allowed to experience facials.”

However, this view was soon about to change.

A moment of liberty beyond boundaries…

After entering the workforce, Derrick felt that his career was being held back by his skin and decided to search for long-term skincare solutions – even prepared to consider the once-taboo option of facials.

“It was a rather vain decision but it occurred to me while I was reading a magazine. All the successful people you see were all well-groomed. For me, to advance my career, it was important to have good skin as it shows others you can take care of yourself and by extension, a team.”

That was ultimately the turning point for Derrick – leading him to take up his friend’s recommendation at a local facial spa known as Porcelain.

Believing in the recommendation, Derrick gave Porcelain a try in 2020 and had not turned back since.

“When I caught up with university friends, they noticed my skin improved. I felt more confident in my presentations and I even realised that my bosses were fielding me for more senior management discussions.”

Since then, Derrick’s relationship with his skin grew beyond the occasional facial. This included a robust skincare routine that he never lives without (even when travelling pre-COVID), investing in his skin through his lifestyle habits and diet.

“I’m more careful with my diet – making sure to reduce oily foods, dairy and caffeine. I also make sure I get my 7 hours of sleep as much as I can.”

A piece of advice for my younger self:

“It’s important to research but not overdo it, to find a reputable company you can trust and avoid DIY as you may not know what product works best for your skin. Most importantly, never be afraid to try something.”

And a piece of advice for those experiencing similar imperfections:

“If I can overcome my skin imperfection, so can you.”

Derrick’s Favourites:

Though he first started his Porcelain skin journey with OxyRevive and saw his skin improve drastically with the Quintessential, Derrick’s favourite was Cryotherapy.

For products, Derrick admitted that it was hard to pick his favourite.  Eventually, he concluded that the HA+ Hydrating Serum was his must-have. “It helped me a lot. Before using it, my skin was dry and sensitive but after introducing it into my routine, I swear by it.”

The Porcelain Difference:

“I love the homely feeling at Porcelain, especially Porcelain Face Spa. It gives me a sense of comfort and that I’m being well taken care of.”

We would like to thank Derrick for sharing his journey and providing a perspective we rarely get to see. We hope it sheds a comforting light on your journey to embracing your own imperfections. Know that your beauty is more than meets the eye and is a result of your unique experiences. We will always be here to journey with you as you embrace them.

Love, Porcelain.

“Joy is a decision, a really brave one, about how you are going to respond to life.”

Wess Stafford.

There is plenty of joy to be found in the journey to embracing one’s imperfections though few often see it: accepting our bumpy roads and missteps as invaluable learning experiences that pave the way for future greatness.

Welcome to #MyimPerfection – a collection of real stories graciously shared by individuals on their path to embracing their true selves, unabashed and unmasked.

This month, we listened in to what seemed like a familiar story – a battle with acne- but what lay underneath was a story of perseverance littered with the rare choice of joy.

The gloomy weather that afternoon had set the mood for a calm, mild and cosy conversation. This was quickly turned on its head when Esther arrived at Porcelain Origins. As she greeted the team around her, her beaming smile and chirpy tone instantly lifted the mood and put everyone at ease. Melodic laughter and lively conversation filled the spa as Esther got ready with our makeup artist. Her warm aura and infallible smile made it impossible to detect the true nature of her journey to embracing her imperfections.

What is your imperfection?

“I’ve been battling acne for a very long time and it really affected me. Subconsciously, when you have acne, you just don’t feel as comfortable. You wonder what others think of you: if they’re judging you or staring at your acne.”

At the beginning of her skin journey, Esther’s skin knowledge was limited much like everyone else. This led her to rely heavily on the recommendations of her family and friends.

“When I was younger, my friends would always point out what products had worked for them and seeing their flawless skin convinced me to try them out.”

While trying and testing the wide variety of suggested solutions, Esther went for facials which begun to stabilise her condition. When her skin had finally gotten better, her acne reared its head again when she left for university overseas. The sudden reappearance had left Esther confused as she attempted to decipher the causes of this outbreak.

“I wasn’t sure what the reason was and it came to a point where I decided to go to a doctor to get help.”

Through her doctor, Esther was prescribed anti-biotics which had a positive effect on her skin. But she soon realised that it was not a long term solution as her acne resurfaced the moment her prescription was completed.

Once more, Esther looked to her friends for help. Amongst the many mismatched recommendations and wasted, incompatible products, 2 had left their mark on her. While overseas, Esther was sold on a trending clay mask that was gaining traction for its ability to deeply remove oils and congestion. Though she had not realised it then, the mask had over-exfoliated her skin, causing it to become sensitive. Believing in her friends’ advocacy of the product, Esther continued to give it a go in hopes that it would alleviate her growing list of issues.

“It took me a while to actually realise that the product was making things worse and I don’t think I would ever want to touch it again.”

The second was laser treatments. In 2017, Esther decided to laser treatments a try, once more with the endorsement of her friends. Though she was apprehensive about the invasive nature of the procedure, she decided to go along with it as her friends’ saw good results from their experiences.

Though her initial instincts were correct, she carried on with the treatments only for her skin to increase in sensitivity, to the point where a simple cleanse would cause spots to flare up.

Finally, a recommendation that worked…

Even though her skin journey thus far had been littered with ineffective solutions, Esther still chose to continue her search for the right solution that would one day provide her with the joys of healthy skin.

After completing her university studies overseas, Esther returned home to hear the final recommendation that would change her skin for years to come.

“I was introduced to Porcelain by my brother.”

During his time in SMU, Esther’s brother had been involved in a competition in which Porcelain was a participating brand. Through that experience, he found out about Porcelain’s approach and decided to recommend it to Esther who was searching for an effective remedy. Given that she had yet to find the skincare solution that worked for her, Esther decided to give Porcelain a shot.

“Though I was with Porcelain for a few months, I saw improvements in my skin. Even my friends and colleagues around me said I looked and felt more confident.”

Even when she went overseas for an extended time or experienced maskne in recent times, Esther was able to restabilise her skin and enjoy the confidence that healthy skin brought.

Despite the roller coaster ride of trial and error that would have stumped many, Esther chose to face them with a smile in hopes that one day, she would soak in the joys of having healthy skin.

A piece of advice for my younger self:

“Don’t just jump into any skincare products without properly understanding your skin and educating yourself on skincare.”

Esther’s Favourites:

“I recently tried Illuminate and really enjoy that treatment.” Much like Cellin & Mei Ying, Esther’s journey with Porcelain started with the Quintessential and OxyRevive but as her skin improved and progressed beyond acne, she ventured out to give different facials a try.

Hydro Cleanser and Glycolic Toner are my staples. I began using Hydro Cleanser when I started my journey at Porcelain and I have not switched it since then. The Glycolic Toner always leaves my skin feeling refreshed. Plus, it helps with exfoliating your skin without making it feel too dry.”

The Porcelain Difference:

“It’s definitely the effectiveness. That is something that I personally stand by because it’s proven itself over the years for me.”

We would like to thank Esther for sharing her magnetic personality and refreshingly cheer. We hope it sheds a comforting light on your journey to embracing your own imperfections. Know that your beauty is more than meets the eye and is a result of your unique experiences. We will always be here to journey with you as you embrace them.

Embracing one’s imperfections is more than just accepting the physical flaws you see. It’s a continuous journey that involves actively prioritising ourselves – giving time to activities, habits and efforts that make us feel good and better ourselves. But with so many things fighting for our time and attention, self-love has become a forgotten priority.

Welcome to #MyimPerfection – a collection of real stories, graciously shared by individuals on their path to embracing their true selves, unabashed and unmasked.

This month, we listened to a refreshing story of self-love: a balancing act between making time for yourself and the things around you.

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon at Porcelain Signatures where we met up with Cellin. Within the first few minutes of settling down, Cellin’s magnetic personality revealed itself, filling the tranquil spa with laughter and intriguing conversation. We sat down with the capable young mum to hear her story.

What is your imperfection?

“In my teen years, I experienced my share of breakouts and I had this bad habit of squeezing them because I wanted to be rid of these ugly things on my face.”

The urge to free herself of the pesky blemishes left Cellin with marks and scars that she did not know how to manage. As Cellin continued, she revealed that the early stages of her skincare journey were filled with coincidence and happenchance.

“My first proper facial happened by accident: I was in a neighbourhood beauty salon getting my brows threaded when the lady offered to give me a facial to help with my skin.” Though it sounded like a good offer at the time, it left more marks and scars behind.

Much like anyone else, when Cellin started working, she decided to invest in an established facial spa. Trusting its reputation, she bought skincare products and packages that she believed would help. Eventually, Cellin realised that it was not working for her skin, feeling that recommendations were not tailored to her skin and were given to fulfil sales quotas. Disappointed, she decided to put a hold on facials.

In her third soiree with facials, Cellin found herself trying the facials at her neighbourhood manicure spot. Though the process was painful and left her more scars than before, she decided to stick with it as it cleared the congestion she always struggled with.

“Every time I went, I look like I went through a war. After the facial, I would need to bear with looking ugly because of the long recovery times.”

Given that Cellin’s work required her to represent her company to countless clients, the increasing scars and long downtimes affected her confidence despite her capabilities.

“I worked in the healthcare industry and I felt so embarrassed and insecure that my skin was not in a healthy state.”

Forth times’ the charm..

“After 2 years at that particular facial spot, I was recommended by a friend to try out Porcelain and I decided to check it out as I had seen her skin improve through the time that I had known her.”

Living just 5 minutes away from Porcelain Face Spa (Porcelain’s first outlet), she decided to pop by and give it a chance. Compared to her other experiences with extraction facials, Cellin was pleasantly surprised by the treatment.

“I went for the trial and was very amazed because, for the first time, my skin did not look bruised. The treatment did not leave behind large red marks like previous facials had and I was still able to look presentable the next day. My skin finally looked happy.”

Captivated by the results she experienced, Cellin decided to continue on with her treatments at Porcelain. Though her skin was improving and Cellin started to gain confidence, another imperfection began to arise in her life – one that was beyond the surface of her skin. As a new mother, she found herself forgetting to make time for her self-care as she poured her all into being a parent.

“Before I became a parent, time felt like it was an infinite resource. But ever since I became one, every second with my child is precious to me – to the point where I had forgotten to give myself some time.”

Balancing Act Between Time and Self Love..

Struggling to find time for herself, Cellin decided to start small – with lunchtime workout classes.

“Since lunchtime was the only time I could give, I decided to make it a priority for myself. Though it was a rush, it made me feel good to have that hour to myself.”

A simple 60 minutes was all Cellin needed to realise that self-care did not need to always be lavish or extensive. It encouraged her to prioritise the vital things in her life, putting in the effort to ensure there was always time for her self-care activities. Even if it meant waking up at 5:30am for meditations or sneaking in a quick masking session after her child had gone to sleep – it helped Cellin feel more confident in herself.

“It made me radiate more positive energy – I was more relaxed, patient and present with my child.”

Having been with Porcelain for over 7 years, Cellin experienced a novel journey: gaining confidence in her skin and herself, learning the true meaning of self-care. We could not be more thankful to be there, journeying along with her.

A piece of advice for my younger self…

“Self-care is not selfish. Take time to take care of yourself so that you may take better care of others.”

Cellin’s Favourites:

Artic Tone™ and Proionic are my favourites!”

Though Cellin started her Porcelain journey with the Quintessential facial, her skin’s needs have evolved. Now focused on future-proofing her skin, Arctic Tone and Proionic both work at the muscular and cellular level to provide her with a timeless complexion.

“I like the HA+ Hydrating Serum and Hydraclear Gel. But whenever I feel like indulging, I always put on the Bio-Cellulose Mask and listen to some music.”

The Porcelain Difference:

“I have been at Porcelain for 7 years and the few things I really enjoy are the trusting relationship I have built with my therapist, the lack of hard-selling and sincerity in recommendations. I feel relaxed knowing that I do not have to rush to get my card out and that the recommendations are genuinely for the benefit of my skin.”

We would like to thank Cellin for sharing her wisdom and love for self-care. We hope it sheds a comforting light on your journey to embracing your own imperfections. Know that your beauty is more than meets the eye and is a result of your unique experiences. We will always be here to journey with you as you embrace them.

Love, Porcelain.

Embracing one’s imperfections has never been an effortless journey. For most, it is a lonely, unlit path filled with dead ends and booby traps. Though intimidating, we often find comfort in the experiences of others knowing they emerged stronger than ever.

Welcome to #MyimPerfection – a collection of real stories, graciously shared by individuals on their path to embracing their true selves, unabashed and unmasked.

This month, we found ourselves listening in to a familiar story: a struggle to find confidence and self-acceptance in the face of acne.

We met up with Mei Ying, a poised 32-year-old, in bustling Porcelain Origins. To our surprise, she came in with a bare face, skin flawless and dewy fresh – a sight we were not expecting given the session was about imperfections! After settling down and having her natural features enhanced with a touch of makeup, we sat down to hear her journey to embracing her imperfections.

What is your imperfection?

Candidly, Mei Ying revealed that acne was her imperfection, something we would have never guessed given the healthy radiance her skin was emitting.

“During my teenage years, I had really bad acne – like huge red bumps. With my acne journey starting out a lot earlier than the rest of my peers which caused me to develop a sense of inferiority.”

To manage her acne, Mei Ying sought help from her family, turning to her mother and elder brother (who experienced the same issues) for advice.

With her mother having little knowledge in skincare and scepticism towards facial treatments, there was little she could offer Mei Ying. Thus, she looked to her brother who recommended using the drug store staple Oxy Cream (a familiar solution to those of us who have struggled with acne) as that had worked for him.

“It was a good solution back then because it helped to dry the acne up. But t it left me with scars.”

As time passed, the Oxy Cream lost its effectiveness, causing her acne to reemerge. Yearning to rid herself of it quickly, Mei Ying started incorporating a deluge of solutions she believed would work. From copying her mum’s use of Hazeline Snow Cream, washing her face 3 to 4 times a day to remove the oily sheen, to picking and popping her own acne.

The result? Mei Ying developed dry skin and uneven skin tone (thanks to the whitening properties of Hazeline Snow Cream), all in addition to her acne.

“To summarise, this part of my journey with acne was all about trying every single product I came across in hopes that it would free me of my acne.”

And this was only the beginning…

“In university, I started to experiment with makeup. However, I did not know the proper ways to remove it, causing my existing acne to worsen alongside the development of many small bumps across my face.”

But after all this time of dealing with her acne alone, Mei Ying finally got the help she needed – from her aunt! Given that her aunt was well versed in the realm of skincare, she brought Mei Ying along to visit a dermatologist – paying for her consultation as well as product prescription. For a while, the products worked, leaving Mei Ying with the skin that she always wanted. But as the products ran out and having little financial capability as a student to support her visits to the dermatologist, her acne started to crawl back into her life.

“The thought of going to a facial place to treat my skin came to mind. So I started to look for affordable facials and found Porcelain. Perhaps it was just fate, but I decided to check it out.”

Back in the early 2010s, where Porcelain Extraction facial trials were  conducted by Director Aesthetician Jenny, Mei Ying decided to give Porcelain a try. The 2-to-3-hour session was a painful one Mei Ying recalls, noting that she teared up quite a bit. Despite the ordeal and having left with a face covered in red spots from the deep extractions, Mei Ying noticed that her skin smoothened out significantly and looked better a few days after the redness subsided.

As she was still schooling at the time, her finances restricted her from regular visits with Porcelain. Thus, she continued her search for affordable alternatives, with each never truly providing the long-lasting results she sought after.

“After I found a job and started receiving a stable income in 2013, I decided to return to Porcelain and ever since then, I have only witnessed improvements in my skin!”

A piece of advice for my younger self…

“I should not have succumbed to make up to conceal my imperfections. Instead, to understand the causes of my acne and have a solid skincare routine.”

Mei Ying’s Favourites:

“Quintessential and Cryotherapy are my favourites!”

Though Quintessential is a staple in Mei Ying’s regimes, Cryotherapy captured her heart. Witnessing immediate brightening and reduction in pores.

“For products, I cannot live without Hydraclear Gel. Whenever I feel an impending pimple, I always apply it  to prevent its  growth.”

The Porcelain Difference:

“One thing that I love about Porcelain is the fact that there is no hard-selling. It made me comfortable with coming back. Plus, the therapists are very well-educated about the products and are happy to share that knowledge.”

We would like to thank Mei Ying for being so gracious in sharing her story. We hope that it sheds a comforting light on your journey to embracing your own imperfections. Know that your beauty is a result of your unique experiences, and we will always be here to journey with you as you embrace them.

Love, Porcelain.

Ever wondered about the reason behind your dull skin, even after a good night’s rest and use of proper skincare? One of the key reasons behind dull skin is insufficient oxygen flow, but there are other factors that matter.

  1. Improper diet, lifestyle and dehydration causes dull skin

Our skin reflects the food we eat. Proper nutrition greatly affects the health of your skin! The late nights partying may seem like harmless #YOLO fun, but drinking and smoking severely dehydrate the skin. Keep yourself adequately hydrated after a night out, eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise regularly to get the blood pumping!

  1. Environmental pollution, too.

Environmental pollution can result in dull skin

For city dwellers, smog, dust and other kinds of environmental pollutants congest our pores daily. Environmental pollution also increases the free radicals in your cells, which cause premature ageing. Ensure you double cleanse daily with an antioxidant-rich milk cleanser before your usual cleanser for a hydrating deep cleanse. This rids your skin of unwanted congestion.

  1. Lack of proper exfoliation

Regular exfoliation prevents the buildup of dead skin cells. It also stimulates the cell renewal process and microcirculation as you massage your skin. Do use gentle, hydrating exfoliators as over-drying ingredients can stimulate more sebum and unwanted skin issues.

  1. Sun exposure

A bad tan is not the only problem that comes from prolonged sun exposure to the sun. Your complexion can also become dull and your skin can take on a leathery, rough feeling. Apply (and reapply) sunscreen to slow the ageing process.

  1. Air-conditioned spaces

Air conditioning may be the greatest invention of the 21st century, but it causes dehydration to the skin. Using a humidifier when and applying moisturizers before you sleep can help your skin remain hydrated!

With all these factors in play, it is important for your skincare routine to include products that are suitable for your skin. Porcelain’s new and proprietary Revive, Glycolic Acid Toner is alcohol-, paraben- and mineral oil-free to prevent skin irritation. Boasting ingredients like witch hazel, Vitamin C and aloe vera, the Glycolic Toner also has glycolic acid and lactic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells while thoroughly removing traces of makeup and dirt that may be left behind even after cleansing.

What’s left is skin with pH balance-restored at its natural level to allow for better absorption of products. Lactic acid, a.k.a. alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), also increases collagen production to aid in skin regeneration as the skin ages. Besides unclogging pores and reducing the chances of a breakout, sodium hyaluronate in the toner locks in moisture to leave your complexion smooth and supple.

Here are other benefits the Glycolic Acid Toner can offer:

  • Tone and brighten skin
  • Visibly reduce the appearance of pore size
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of ageing
  • Refine skin texture

Fixing Dull Skin: The Glycolic Toner gently exfoliates dead skin cells for a clear, radiant complexion
