Your Fundamental Guide to Sensitive Skincare

Sensitive skin is an increasingly common skin condition experienced by many. Though common, it can be tricky to deal with: even the slightest change in your lifestyle or skincare routine can cause flare-ups that last weeks on end. But fret not, the solution to managing sensitivity lies in understanding its root cause.   

Without further ado, let us get right into sensitivity, understanding everything from its root causes to simple steps you can incorporate into your routine to build stronger, calmer skin.

Understanding Sensitivity 

We always believe that the best way to tackle any skincare issue is to understand its root causes. When it comes to sensitivity, we must first clarify that there are two types: Sensitive skin vs Sensitised skin.   

On the surface, both share the same symptoms and appearance (redness, inflammation, reactiveness), making them hard to differentiate. But, they are each a result of different factors. 

Sensitive Skin 

Sensitive skin is a skin type determined by genetics. It often comes paired with other skin conditions like Eczema, Dermatitis and Rosacea. This form of sensitivity is experienced from a young age and is triggered by environmental and lifestyle changes (i.e. temperature, humidity and diet).   

This form of sensitivity can never be fully resolved. However, with the right skincare regime, its severity can be greatly reduced and managed.   

Sensitised Skin  

Sensitised skin is a skin condition resulting from a weakened skin barrier. Our skin’s natural barrier thrives on a delicate balance of oils, bacteria and hydration. This balance can be thrown off when:  

  • Harsh or poor products are used  
  • Products (even good ones) are used improperly  
  • The skin simply is not getting the required moisture, hydration or nutrients to function 

Any combination of these factors can hinder the skin’s ability to defend itself, making it more reactive. Sensitised skin also comes hand in hand with an existing skin type like Oily, Dry and Ageing. 

However, unlike sensitive skin, sensitised skin can be fully resolved with the right skincare regime.   

How to Manage Your Sensitivity 

With a clearer understanding of the root differences between sensitive and sensitised skin, here are some tips to establish a skincare routine that works to rebuild and support your natural barrier.

1. Balance Your pH 

Your skin’s pH is an indicator of the health of your skin’s natural barrier. An optimal pH would be between 5.5 to 6. However, not everyone has a proper pH testing kit at home. Thus, we use our skin’s symptoms and behaviours as an indicator instead. Our natural barrier thrives when there is an optimal balance of oil and hydration in the skin. Any imbalances would be revealed through the skin’s symptoms. For example, oily skin types have an imbalance in their pH thanks to the over-production of sebum to compensate for the lack of hydration.

Once you have discovered your skin type, it is time to work on rebalancing your skin pH.   

Oily Skin:  

Oily skin over-produces sebum to compensate for the lack of hydration. Thus, focus on rehydrating the skin and controlling oil production with these products:

Niacinamide: Known as Vitamin B3, it works to strengthen the skin’s surface while improving skin tone, minimising pores and diminishing dullness. Additionally, when paired with moisturisers, it can boost the skin’s healing ability and retain greater moisture.   

Apart from the good stuff, keep an eye out for these known irritants. 

To Avoid:  

Drying Alcohols: Though not all alcohols are bad for the skin, drying alcohols cause the skin to be dry and more sensitive. Drying alcohols include SD alcohol, ethanol, denatured alcohol, ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. 

Phthalates & Fragrances: Several Phthalates DEHP & DBP have been classified as reproductive toxicants by the European Chemical Agency. Additionally, they are common components in synthetic fragrances found in products. Synthetic fragrances are known to sensitise the skin over time. Furthermore, listing the individual ingredients that make up fragrances is not required, making them an unknown danger. 

3. Treat Your Microbiome 

Another layer to our skin’s barrier is its microbiome. A microbiome is your skin’s very own ecosystem of bacteria. When in a healthy state, it protects against infections and can minimise inflammation. The best (and easiest) way to support your skin’s microbiome is to incorporate Prebiotics and Probiotics.
